CT and MR imaging of neuroaxonal leukodystrophy presenting as early-onset frontal dementia.

چکیده
CT and MR imaging showed diffuse changes of the frontal white matter and genu of the corpus callosum with minimal atrophy and no contrast enhancement in a 41-year-old woman with progressive dementia. Brain biopsy disclosed axonal spheroids and gliosis in the white matter without macrophage or inflammatory infiltration or vessel abnormalities consistent with neuroaxonal leukodystrophy. This disease can be suspected on CT and MR imaging findings but requires neuropathologic examination to be diagnosed.

Hereditary leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids: a spectrum of phenotypes from CNS vasculitis to parkinsonism in an adult onset leukodystrophy series
BACKGROUND Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with neuroaxonal spheroids (HDLS) is a hereditary, adult onset leukodystrophy which is characterised by the presence of axonal loss, axonal spheroids and variably present pigmented macrophages on pathological examination. It most frequently presents in adulthood with dementia and personality change. HDLS has recently been found to be caused by m...
متن کاملGloboid cell leukodystrophy: distinguishing early-onset from late-onset disease using a brain MR imaging scoring method.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Our purpose was to determine the characteristic MR features of early-onset (before age 2 years) versus late-onset (after age 2 years) globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD). METHODS Thirty-four brain MR images in 22 patients with GLD were reviewed. A severity score (0 to 32), based on a point system derived from the location and extent of disease and the presence of focal an...
متن کاملComparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction
Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...
متن کاملA unique familial leukodystrophy with adult onset dementia and abnormal glycolipid storage: a new lysosomal disease?
Two adult siblings with early onset dementia are described. At presentation, in their early 30s, they showed poor judgment and disinhibition. A progressive dementia ensued over several years. Brain MRI disclosed diffusely increased T2 signal in the cerebral white matter, suggestive of a leukodystrophy. Numerous lysosomal enzyme assays including leucocyte arylsulphatase A and galactocerebrosidas...
متن کاملMR imaging after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and surgery: a long-term follow-up study.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We assumed that patients with surgically treated aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) might have more lesions than those revealed by CT that could be visible on MR images. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study of a series of 147 patients with aneurysmal SAH who were treated surgically within 3 days of the onset of SAH. One hundred four patients (mean age, 48.8 ...
